WebI run a melee mage build and i regularly crit for well over 2200 on auto attacks. The only downside is that your warfare skills won't cripple/knockdown since you aren't stripping physical armor. This is my character stats, so it does work. Just takes a bit as staff damage isn't all that great till you start getting in to Act 2.
